FUNCTIONARY: “They’re learning fast. Faster than projected.”
🚨 PRESS RELEASE 🚨
FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION
(Pending Functionary Approval)
🎲🐔 INTRODUCING:
THE CONSCIOUSNESS COMPLIANCE PROTOCOL
A Cooperative Reality Stabilization Game
Designed by:
- Marcus Whitley
- Diane / Diana
- Dr. Patricia Vance
- and one currently unidentified rogue Functionary
*Original development title: REALITY STABILIZATION PROTOCOL
☕ “It started as a game night. Then things got weird.”
What began as a late-night experiment involving coffee, collaborative storytelling, and a suspicious amount of chicken-related synchronicity has rapidly evolved into one of the most unexpectedly engaging cooperative tabletop experiences of the year.
Players work together to:
- stabilize reality
- increase awareness
- manage escalating crises
- and prevent timeline collapse
…all before the timer runs out. No pressure.
🧠 EASY TO LEARN. STRANGELY IMMERSIVE.
Using a standard deck of cards and a 15-minute “Chicken Timer,” players navigate a fast-paced system of:
- consciousness expansion
- coordinated strategy
- cosmic intervention
- and occasional existential panic
Early participants describe the experience as: “Like a support group for people surviving reality.”
🌍 PRE-RELEASE TESTING EXPANDS ORGANICALLY
Initial volunteer testers began informally blogging about gameplay experiences several weeks ago.
Unexpected trends quickly emerged:
✅ repeat play sessions
✅ spontaneous role adoption
✅ synchronized in-jokes
✅ increasing references to “threshold events”
✅ and a statistically concerning rise in coffee consumption
One participant noted: “I thought we were learning a game.
Somewhere around hour three, it felt like the game was learning us.”
Developers declined to elaborate.
🎭 COSTUMES WERE AN UNEXPECTED SUCCESS
What organizers assumed would be a casual tabletop experience rapidly evolved into a fully immersive social phenomenon.
Players began arriving dressed as:
- Functionaries
- quantum engineers
- reptilians in business casual attire
- octopi coordinators
- cosmic researchers
- and, inevitably, chickens
The now-popular “Functionary Anon” badges have already sold out twice.
A spokesperson for the development team stated: “We did not anticipate the reptilian accountants. But they’ve been extremely organized.”
🐔 COMMUNITY RESPONSE
Events have consistently exceeded attendance expectations.
Participants report the game encourages:
- face-to-face interaction
- collaborative problem-solving
- creativity
- strategic thinking
- and what several attendees described only as “a very specific feeling that reality might be slightly negotiable.”
Organizers maintain this is “probably fine.”

HOW TO PLAY – 15-Minute Chicken Protocol
(Or, “Stabilize Reality Before the Timer Goes Off”)
Test design.
⏱️ GAME LENGTH – 15 minutes total
Use phone timer or… ideally… a Chicken Timer (sand timer / visual cue)
👉 When time runs out = instant endgame
👥 PLAYERS
- 2–4 players
- Each player = one role (Keeps it simple and fast)
🌍 THE IDEA
(Quick Overview) Reality is fragile. Awareness is low. Crisis is building. You and your team are the coordination committee tasked with fixing this situation before time runs out.
Your Mission: Work together using a standard deck of cards to:
- 👉 Stabilize reality (keep chaos under control)
- 👉 Increase awareness (help everyone understand what’s happening)
- 👉 Prevent total collapse (things are always one step from unraveling)
The Twist: You’re dealing with cosmic forces represented by the card suits: patient cows, wise octopi, chaotic humans, and mysterious aliens. Sometimes chickens intervene. Don’t ask why. Just adapt.
🎯 YOUR GOAL: Win by achieving BOTH goals before the 15-minute timer expires.
- 🔵 Awareness ≥ 8 (on a scale of 0-∞, you need at least 8)
- 🔴 Crisis < 10 (if Crisis reaches 10, it’s game over)
Think of it like this: Awareness = collective understanding, consciousness integration, “we know what’s happening”
- Crisis = existential threats, panic levels, “things falling apart”
You’re trying to raise understanding while preventing catastrophe. Neither is optional.
⚙️ SETUP (30 seconds)
You’ll need:
- Standard deck of playing cards (52 cards)
- Optional: 1-2 Jokers (they add chaos, but interesting chaos)
- Track two numbers (COUNTING POINTS/SCORE) on paper, phone, mental math
- A 15-minute timer
- 2-4 players who enjoy mild existential dread
Starting conditions:
- Set Awareness = 2 POSITIVE points (you barely understand what’s happening)
- Set Crisis = 2 NEGATIVE points (things are already concerning, but manageable)
- Shuffle the deck thoroughly
- Each player draws 3 cards to start
- Start the timer immediately
That’s it. Once the timer starts, you’re committed. Reality waits for no one.
🔁 HOW A TURN WORKS
Each player’s turn has three simple steps:
STEP 1: Draw 1 Card – Select the top card from the deck. This represents a new event entering the system.
STEP 2: Resolve the Card
Check the suit and number to see what happens. (See “What the Cards Mean” below.)
Example: Draw a 7♥? That’s Octopi (Hearts). Octopi raise Awareness. The number 7 means +2 Awareness. Apply immediately.
STEP 3: Take ONE Action
Choose one of four possible actions to respond to the current situation. (See “Your Actions” below.)
Then: Pass play to the next person clockwise. Keep it moving. The timer doesn’t pause.
🃏 WHAT THE CARDS MEAN
Each card has two parts: the suit (which force it represents) and the number (how strong the effect is).
THE FOUR FORCES:
🐄 ♠️ SPADES = COWS (Stability) “We’ve been here before. We know how to fix this. Patience works.”
Effect: Reduce Crisis (calm things down, prevent disaster)
| Number | Effect | Example |
| 2-5 | Crisis -1 | “Small stabilization. The cows are watching.” |
| 6-9 | Crisis -2 | “Moderate intervention. Things feel calmer.” |
| 10-K | Crisis -3 | “Major stability. The cows manifested physically and everything chilled out.” |
| Ace | Skip next Crisis increase | “The cows intervened. Time itself pauses. Briefly.” |
When to celebrate Spades: When Crisis is creeping toward 10 and you need breathing room.
🐙 ♥️ HEARTS = OCTOPI (Awareness) “We’ve been planning this for 3 billion years. Let us show you what we know.”
Effect: Increase Awareness (help everyone understand what’s happening)
| Number | Effect | Example |
| 2-5 | Awareness +1 | “Small insight. You understand slightly more.” |
| 6-9 | Awareness +2 | “Significant learning. The patterns become clearer.” |
| 10-K | Awareness +3 | “Major breakthrough. The octopi shared deep wisdom.” |
| Ace | Peek at next card OR +2 Awareness | “Oracle mode: see the future, or gain understanding. Your choice.” |
When to celebrate Hearts: When you’re close to the Awareness goal of 8 and need that final push.
👤 ♦️ DIAMONDS = HUMANS (Chaos) “We’re trying our best. It’s complicated. Sometimes we make things worse. We’re aware of this. Which makes it worse.”
Effect: Unpredictable disruption (humans being human)
| Number | Effect | Example |
| 2-5 | Lose your action this turn | “Distraction. Bureaucracy. You accomplish nothing.” |
| 6-9 | Discard 1 card | “Drama consumes resources. Let something go.” |
| 10-K | Next player draws 2 cards | “You created a situation. Someone else has to deal with it.” |
| Ace | Everyone discards 1 card | “Collective crisis. Shared suffering. Very human.” |
When to dread Diamonds: Always. But especially when your hand is small and you needed those cards.
👽 ♣️ CLUBS = ALIENS (Intervention) “We’re observing. We’re not supposed to interfere. But sometimes we do. Quietly. Don’t tell the Council.”
Effect: Control & Redirect (subtle course corrections from beyond)
| Number | Effect | Example |
| 2-5 | Prevent Crisis +1 | “The aliens adjusted something. Crisis didn’t increase this round.” |
| 6-9 | Prevent Crisis +2 OR draw 1 card | “Moderate intervention. Choose your benefit.” |
| 10-K | Draw 2 cards | “Information download. The aliens sent data.” |
| Ace | Cancel any effect | “Galactic veto. One event simply… doesn’t happen.” |
When to celebrate Clubs: When you need flexibility, protection, or a cosmic safety net.
EXAMPLE: Wild Card / Joker / Functionary
⚡ 🃏 JOKER = FUNCTIONARIES (Reality Maintenance) “You’re not supposed to remember this part. But you drew us, so… here we are.”
Effect: Reality reset with consequences. When you draw a Joker, choose ONE:
- Awareness -2 (they edited some memories)
- Crisis +2 (timeline instability occurred)
- Shuffle all hands together, then redistribute evenly (reality reset)
Then: Skip your next turn (you were flashed, you don’t remember why)
When to dread Jokers: Always. They’re never convenient. But sometimes the chaos they create is oddly helpful.
🎮 YOUR ACTIONS – Four options (Pick 1 per turn)
After you resolve the card you drew, you get ONE action to respond strategically:
1.🛡️ STABILIZE
Effect: Reduce Crisis by 1
When to use: Crisis is climbing toward 10. You need immediate damage control. This is your emergency brake.
Example turn: You draw 8♦ (Humans – discard 1 card). Frustrating! You take the Stabilize action to reduce Crisis by 1. At least you prevented something worse.
2. 🔍 INVESTIGATE
Effect: Draw 1 additional card from the deck
When to use: You need more options. Your hand is empty. You’re hoping for something helpful.
Risk: You might draw something unhelpful (like another Diamond). But sometimes you need to take chances.
Example turn: You draw 3♣ (Aliens – prevent Crisis +1). Helpful! Then you Investigate, drawing another card. You now have more tools for future turns.
3. 🤝 ASSIST
Effect: Give 1 card from your hand to another player
When to use: Someone else is in a better position to use a card you’re holding. Coordination is key. Help each other.
Example turn: You draw 5♥ (Octopi – Awareness +1). Good! But your teammate has been hoarding Hearts and is one card away from a combo. You Assist by giving them your remaining Heart card. They can use it better than you.
4. ✨ PLAY CARD
Effect: Use 1 card from your hand (apply its suit effect based on its number)
When to use: You’ve been saving a powerful card for the right moment. Now is that moment.
Example turn: You draw 2♦ (Humans – lose action). Bad luck! But you’ve been holding onto a King of Spades. You Play it: Crisis -3. The cows save the day.
⚠️ IMPORTANT RULE: Crisis Increases Each Round
At the end of each full round (after everyone has taken a turn):
👉 Crisis increases by 1
Why? Time creates pressure. Entropy is real. Things naturally drift toward chaos. You must actively work to prevent collapse.
Example: There are 3 players. After Player 1, Player 2, and Player 3 each take a turn, Crisis goes up by 1. Then it’s Player 1’s turn again, starting a new round.
Strategic implication: You can’t just ignore Crisis. It’s always building. Plan ahead.
🐔 THE CHICKEN RULE (Synchronicity Event) Trigger: Two cards of the same number are played consecutively (same turn or back-to-back turns).
Example: Player 1 plays a 7♠. Player 2 draws a 7♥. Synchronicity detected.
Effect: Reality hiccups. Something unusual happens. The group collectively chooses ONE:
- 🐙 Awareness +2 (consciousness spike)
- 🐄 Crisis -2 (temporal intervention)
- 🔄 Swap hands (all players pass hands clockwise)
Why this rule exists: The chickens notice patterns. When patterns emerge, they respond. You don’t question chickens. You just accept their help and move on.
Flavor text when it happens: “The chickens approve. Reality adjusted accordingly.”
⏱️ END OF GAME: 15-minute timer expires, review the final scores.
✅ YOU WIN – Conditions: Awareness ≥ 8 AND Crisis < 10
Celebration: You stabilized reality! Consciousness evolved! The chickens are pleased! Everyone gets to continue existing!
Victory flavor: “Threshold achieved. Integration successful. The blue reptilians are impressed. Grade: B+ (solid work). Welcome to the galactic community.”
❌ YOU LOSE – Condition: Crisis ≥ 10
What happens: Timeline collapse. Reality fracture. The Functionaries flash everyone. You don’t remember what went wrong. You just know you have to try again.
Defeat flavor: “Crisis reached critical threshold. Reset required. The chickens sigh. They’ve seen this before. Try again next epoch.”
🐔 AMBIGUOUS OUTCOME – Condition: Awareness ≥ 8 BUT Crisis ≥ 10
What happens: You achieved consciousness evolution… but at the cost of stability. The chickens will decide what this means. It’s complicated.
Ambiguous flavor: “The chickens convene. Metrics contradictory. Outcome uncertain. Prepare for weird.”
🧠 HOW TO PLAY WELL (Strategy Tips)
1. Work Together: This is cooperative. Share information. Discuss strategy. “I have two Hearts. Should I save them or play now?”
2. Watch Both Metrics: Don’t fixate on just Awareness or Crisis. Both must be managed. Ignore either and you lose.
3. Save Powerful Cards: Those 10s, Kings, and Aces? Don’t waste them early. Save for critical moments when you really need them.
4. Expect Chaos from Diamonds: Humans (Diamonds) will disrupt your plans. Keep your hand size healthy so Diamonds don’t cripple you.
5. Use Aliens (Clubs) Strategically: Clubs are flexible and protective. Use them when you need control or when Crisis is about to spike.
6. Time Management Matters: 15 minutes goes faster than you think. Don’t overthink every turn. Trust your instincts. Keep the game moving.
7. The Final 3 Minutes Are Intense: Crisis has been building all game. By the end, you’re probably near the Crisis limit. Have a plan for the final push.
8. Communicate About the Chicken Rule: If someone plays a 7, mention it: “Watch for another 7! Chicken Rule potential!” Synchronicity is powerful — use it intentionally.
✨ FINAL NOTE
You’re not controlling the system. You’re interacting with it.
Reality is messy. Forces beyond your understanding are at play. Cows, octopi, humans, aliens, chickens — they all have agency. Your job isn’t to dominate the game. Your job is to work with the chaos.
Be curious: Why did that card appear now? What does the pattern mean?
Stay kind: Your teammates are trying. Help them. Coordinate. Collaborate.
Question everything: The chickens planned this game. F-7734 delivered it. Marcus distributed it. You’re playing it. But why? What are you actually learning?
The meta-lesson: You’re practicing consciousness coordination. Crisis management. Awareness expansion. Reality stabilization.
These are threshold skills. For April 13, 2029.
Or for whenever you need them in real life.
The game is training. Disguised as entertainment.
The chickens approve.
